Torneo di noci

Comincia il 9 settembre alle 21.00, in piazza Garibaldi, a Monterosso, l’appuntamento con il tradizionale ‘Torneo di Noci’. Si concluderà giovedì 10 nel centro storico. Una bella occasione per far rivivere le emozioni di un tempo, per tornare tutti un po’ bambini, e per dimostrare, a chi bambino lo è davvero, come sia possibile divertirsi con le cose più semplici che ci circondano.

Mercoledì 9 settembre: torneo dei bambini 4 – 19 anni
Giovedì 10 settembre: torneo dei grandi dai 19 anni

Le regole del gioco.
Scopo del gioco: conquistare il maggior numero di noci possibile. Come? Lanciando ‘il botto’, la noce più grossa e pesante. Ogni giocatore dispone una coppia di noci lungo la linea che delimiterà la guba, l’area tra la zona di tiro dei partecipanti e la fila di noci. Per stabilire l’ordine con cui tireranno i vari partecipanti si procede alla tradizionale conta ‘Min min sò’.

A turno ogni concorrente lancerà il botto: se viene colpita almeno una delle due noci affiancate si vince l’intera coppia. Se con il primo tiro non si colpisce nulla, ma viene oltrepassata la fila di noci, il giocatore ha diritto ad un secondo tiro. Nel caso invece non si colpisca nulla e la grossa noce rimanga nell’area della guba il giocatore perde il diritto al secondo tiro e deve aspettare che tutti gli altri facciano il loro gioco. Una volta conquistate tutte le noci allineate i concorrenti in guba possono spartirsi le noci presenti oppure, e diciamo la verità è quel che aspettano tutti, il giudice di gara può urlare “a rà a rà” dando il via ad una sfrenata corsa per accaparrarsi quante più noci possibili.

The traditional Torneo di Noci (Walnut Tournament) returns to Monterosso on September 9 at 9:00 p.m., in Piazza Garibaldi. The event continues on Thursday, September 10, in the heart of the historic town centre.

It’s a wonderful chance to rediscover the simple joys of the past, to feel like children again for a while, and to show younger generations that you don’t need much to have fun—sometimes, the simplest things around us are all it takes.

Wednesday, September 9: Children’s Tournament, ages 4–19
Thursday, September 10: Adults’ Tournament, ages 19 and over

How the game works

The aim is simple: collect as many walnuts as possible.
The key to victory is il botto—the biggest and heaviest walnut, which each player uses as a projectile.
Before the game begins, each player places a pair of walnuts along the line marking the guba, the area between the players’ throwing zone and the row of walnuts. The traditional counting rhyme “Min min sò” determines the order in which everyone takes their turn.
Players then take turns throwing il botto. If the throw hits at least one of the two walnuts, the player wins the whole pair.

But there’s a catch: if the first throw misses the walnuts but il botto travels beyond the row, the player gets a second throw. If nothing is hit and the large walnut remains inside the guba, however, the player loses the right to a second attempt and must wait until everyone else has had their turn.
Once all the walnuts in the row have been won, the players in the guba can divide them up among themselves.
Or—or, let’s be honest, this is the moment everyone is really waiting for—the game judge can suddenly shout “a rà a rà!”.
And that’s the signal for a mad dash, as everyone races to grab as many walnuts as they can!

A simple game, a lot of fun, and a beautiful tradition passed down through generations.
